We are joined again by Jordan Mazur. Jordan is a Registered Dietitian, the Director of Performance Nutrition for the San Francisco 49ers, and Advisor to Momentous. As this was his second time on the podcast, Jordan caught us up on a number of topics, including the whirlwind of an NFL season this past year, injury prevention, glucose monitoring devices, and more.
2:30 – Combining Health Tests & The 2020 NFL Season. “We were on our flight to LA. We were about to play the Rams, so we were still in California. We were on our road trip down south and we get an announcement that our county had shut down. Our county basically shut down contact sports. So we couldn’t operate, we couldn’t practice, with no exception for professional sports.”
18:15 – Injuries & Team Nutrition Approach. “We’ve spent a lot of time this offseason looking at each specific injury that we had. What happened? What lead up to that? What could we have done differently? What can we learn from these situations that were in our control? And, ultimately, a lot of them were out of our control. You look at the contact injuries and there’s nothing you can do when your foot gets caught in a certain way and you have a 300-pound man rolling over you.”
31:00 – Acute Inflammatory Response vs. Chronic Inflammation. “It’s kind of an art, right? There is a lot of evaluation process from that acute phase to that long-term phase, but where is that fine line of anti-inflammatories blunting the training effect or rehab.”
43:30 – Blood Glucose Monitoring Devices. “What I think is really interesting is the individual response to certain foods. Like if you and I both ate an apple, we can see our responses but our responses can be very different.”
