In this episode, we are joined by Megan Grassell. Megan is the founder and CEO of Yellowberry, an apparel company she started at the age of 17. Yellowberry’s mission is to create cute, comfortable, and age-appropriate underwear for girls. Megan’s story quickly went viral and she’s kept the momentum ever since. Megan skipped college to work on her startup and is now recognized as a Thiel Fellow as well as a Forbes 30 Under 30.
In this episode, we discussed the decision to skip college to pursue building a startup, what social life is like as a young CEO, and the people that helped us along the way. Megan and I also discussed her newfound love for running, adjusting to COVID, and being the face of a brand.
3:00 – Skipping College. “In my mind at 18 years old, I thought, ‘Oh! This is great! I’ll hire someone to come in and run it and then I can go to school and it’ll be perfect!.’ And then we just kept growing, we’d raise a seed round, or we would hire somebody, or we would have a partnership with Nordstrom or American Eagle. And I kept putting a pause on the upcoming semester until I decided not to go.”
11:00 – Social Life. “I don’t think that there are a lot of people that are super obsessive with starting a company that are our age.”
21:30 – People Along the Way. “My mom, my dad, my uncle, and my very first investor have been my closest advisors, helpers, support. Those have been through and through the most instrumental for me personally.”
29:00 – Running. “Running has become this daily routine thing that makes me feel really good and is really healthy, but is also becoming a life long sort of sport for me.”
40:00 – Adjusting to COVID & Being the Face of a Brand. “I look back and I was very frustrated that there were not many women that I could sort of name that didn’t go to college that had started companies and have been really successful. And I hope a 13 or 14-year-old girl can look up to me and see that my team and I have built this company and took this path that wasn’t normal.”
